Adult Male Acne

There's good news, adult male acne that first appears when you're an adult is a rare occurrence. It's even less common than adult female acne in general. The bad news is that if you're on this page you probably have it, so that means little to you.

I should know, I've had acne well into my twenties before I aggressively started to treat it.

Unlucky for us, when guys get acne and it's lingered this long, we've had it pretty bad. We tend to get more of it on the chest and back. The nickname it's been given is backne, or bacne.

Scarring

Us men tend to get acne that leaves us with scars more often than women do. That's because we have more testosterone, and that specific hormone tends to push our sebaceous glands to produce more oil on our skin. The extra oil increases the chances for blockages to occur, and boom we've got acne.

That acne causes deeper and larger papules, pustules, and nodules that can wreak havoc on our skin's tissue.

So while females may get acne as an adult more often than us guys, when we get it, it's usually pretty bad.

Athletes

Recently, acne on the chest and back for adult males who partake in athletic activities has become more common. In at least a very small part, the irritation caused by the friction of clothing and sweat could cause breakouts or make them worse.

However, the far more likely reason is due to the increase in usage of performance enhancing drugs. I'm talking about things like creatine, colostrum, and, of course, anabolic steroids such as testosterone and andro. These "supplements" mess with your hormones, which as we know, are tightly linked to the causes of acne.

Are You Sure It's Acne?

There are a couple impostors to look out for. You may have roseacea, which looks similar to acne but has different underlying causes. A common impostor is folliculitis, also known as razor bumps. This is much more common in men since we shave our face quite a bit, and may be too harsh on the skin. This could also occur with men who shave their chest and/or back.
