Detox for Acne Treatment

You should try incorporating a detox for acne into your lifestyle. Detoxification is a great way to give your body a nice boost of health, and consequently clear your skin.

At this point there is a huge amount of conflicting information to be found in regards to detoxification. There are doctors who say detox is a myth and that it is completely unnecessary and on the flip side there are others who say it is absolutely essential you detox for acne, but only a specific way. Both sides exaggerate the truth for various reasons, so it is up to you to use your common sense when you experiment and I'm sure you will form your own opinion in the end.

I'm going to do my best to keep things simple here so that other sources of information don't get you off track. Just keep in mind that there are many snake oil salesmen in this niche.

Understanding Detoxification

Toxins

Detoxification is a natural process of toxin removal that happens inside the body and is managed by the body. Toxins include any sort of foreign metals and chemicals that your body can not use. In addition, many of the byproducts from your cells' natural processes are unusable and have to be removed by the body.

Here are some external sources of toxins:

  • Skin care products
  • Household cleaning products
  • Non-organic foods
  • Polluted air
  • Non-filtered water

Your liver is the main organ for chemical detoxification, while your kidneys, colon, and skin do the mechanical work of elimination.

Bad breath, body odor, and acne are all symptoms of the detox process. Here is a simple equation that describes the speed at which you can detox for acne:

Detox Rate = Rate of Toxins Out - Rate of Toxins In

As you can see the speed at which you detox for acne is dependent on two things: the speed at which you can get rid of toxins and the speed at which you are taking them in. Both are variables that can be adjusted by changing your lifestyle choices.

If the rate of toxins in exceeds the rate of toxins out, the organs of elimination can get overloaded. Excess toxins get stored in the various fat cells throughout your body. This is one of the reasons why people are overweight and have trouble losing fat (despite calorie input/output).

Two simple ways to increase the rate of toxins out is to:

  1. Drink plenty of water. Your pee should be clear or with a slight tinge to it. If it's yellow you're not getting enough water and are stressing your kidneys. Drinking more will make you go to the bathroom more, which is very healthy and aids in your detox for acne.
  2. Get plenty of sleep. Your body detoxes the most when you're sleeping, since you are in a recuperative state. This is especially true if you haven't eaten right before bed so your body doesn't have to work on digestion.

You do not need any of the special cleanses or liver flush products out there for your body to detox. Your body is very good at doing it naturally, and there are simple ways of naturally helping the body improve the detox rate.

In fact, doing too much to artificially improve the detox for acne could end up causing more harm than it is worth. I've heard of people spending their night over the toilet after drinking castor oil to aid in a fast. Carefully consider your options and the risks involved.

Why Detox For Acne?

As you may have read on my hormones and acne page, acne is primarily the result of hormone imbalance and genetic tendencies. So where does toxin buildup fit into this picture?

Well, one of your livers jobs is to "deactivate" hormones so that they do not get recirculated through your bloodstream again. However, if your liver is overly burdened from dealing with toxins all the time, it may not be able to keep up with its hormone job. Therefore, hormones may be going through your body more often than they should be, which can create a hormone imbalance.

In addition, detoxing can help re-establish a healthy gut which also helps with toxin elimination. Some people with acne have a candida overgrowth and/or leaky-gut syndrome which can wreak havoc on your body's hormone balance.

Also, some people say that one way your body gets rid of toxins is by expelling them through your skin in the form of acne. Now I haven't seen any scientific evidence that supports this, but it could be true.

So by doing a detox for acne your liver and gut can do a better job of keeping your hormones in check, which keeps all of your body's systems running normally. This means your oil glands and skin will also behave in a manner which will not create acne.

Detox Diet

One way to detox for acne is to try a detox diet. This is a diet you can try for a short period of time, say a week or two, and see how you feel. You may find yourself feeling worse initially, but after a few days you will likely feel quite a bit better - with clearer skin to boot!

Not only do you reduce the amount of toxins coming in, but you will be putting less digestive stress on the body which allows for more energy to be put towards expelling toxins.

In a detox diet you need to totally refrain from:

  • all kinds of meat
  • dairy
  • fried foods
  • refined carbohydrates
  • processed sugar
  • wheat
  • caffeine
  • alcohol
  • tobacco

Focus on raw organic foods as much as possble. Eat:

  • broccoli
  • blueberries
  • sprouts
  • watermelons
  • apples
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • grapes
  • nuts
  • seeds
  • onions
  • garlic

Personally I think trying a short term fast will give you better results than a diet in a detox for acne, and it is easier to implement. Focusing on eating raw, organic foods is really more of a lifestyle choice that should be implemented gradually for optimal health.

Fasting

"Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick, is to feed your sickness."Hippocrates, M.D., 460-377 B.C., Father of Western Medicine

Fasting is the best way to dramatically (yet temporarily) increase your detox rate when you detox for acne. Hundreds of millions of people around the world practice fasting and yet it is almost non-existent in our western culture. Fasting works for everyone, normalizes many body systems, and has no long-term side effects.

There are many different types of fasts. They can last anywhere from a day to over a month. However, for health purposes, they are typically done somewhere between 3-7 days.

Fasts work because your body does not have to spend so much energy and time digesting food. By reducing digestive stress you free up your body to do a little "house cleaning". You are taking in very little toxins and your body is maximizing its toxin output. Fasting is the best short-term solution to detox for acne and see results.

Fasts also differ by what is consumed during the fast. Here are some of the options:

  • Mono-Fruit
  • A mono-fruit fast is an easier fast to do. You are allowed to choose a certain type of fruit and eat only that fruit for your fasting period. This fast is easier to do because you're still allowed to eat, which makes the detox process less intense.

Some fruits that are typically chosen are:

    • apples
    • grapes (seeded)
    • watermelon

An apple fast is my personal favorite when doing a detox for acne because apples contain pectin, a type of fiber that is great at absorbing toxins. Red Delicious apples have the most pectin.

A 3-day apple fast is one of the easiest fasts to try if you have never done one before. The apples are cheap, easy to obtain and consume, and have great qualities for detoxification.

Here is what you can expect over the 3 days:

You need about 24 hours for body to shut down digestive processes. Make sure you rest and have a comfortable environment.

Day 1: 9-10 apples are generally needed. Drink plenty of water (~60 ounces).Day 2: This is typically the worst day, as temptations for other food will be at its strongest. Your acne might be better or worse.Day 3: You will still be experiencing detox symptoms, which are typically similar to a hangover. However, you should notice a dramatic improvement in your skin.

Be sure you have enough apples for each day by buying plenty beforehand, and try to get them organic as well. Apples are one of the worst fruits for pesticides, so if you can't get organic make sure you at least peel off the skin. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water each day.

  • Green Smoothies and Juice Feasting
  • These fasts are interesting because they provide your body with all the nutrients you need while significantly reducing digestive stress. Therefore, these types of fasts can be done for longer periods of time to allow for very deeps detoxes.

They do take a bit of work to do though. Proper planning, the right equipment, and knowledge are all necessary. There are entire books and web sites devoted to these fasts.

They are a great detox for acne but not one I would typically recommend for a beginner.

  • Water Only
  • By drinking nothing but water for several days you will bring digestive stress to practically zero, allowing for your body to maximize its detox rate. This can be a very intense fast and shouldn't be done for long periods of time. I also don't recommend this type of detox for acne to a beginner because the chances of success are so low.

Get an apple fast or two under your belt before you try this one.

Fasting once or twice a year is actually quite healthy. You don't want to fast too often however.

Some authors recommend the use of enemas or colonics to help the colon get the toxins out of you. In my opinion, enemas or colon therapy is not required, but you may want to have one handy just in case you get constipated. Your body should be fine as long as you keep your detox for acne natural.

Some authors highly recommend them while others say they are not necessary at all. I did not find an enema to be necessary when I tried an apple fast.

There are some weird detox fasts that incorporate castor oil or other methods to enhance the detox for acne. However, these modifications might disrupt your body enough to make you constipated, which does end up making an enema good practice.

Fasting is not a long term solution, but it is a very powerful step you can take. It is a great kick-start to your healing process and clearing your skin.

Symptoms While Detoxing

If you try a detox for acne, here are some of the symptoms you could experience:

  • fatigue
  • chills
  • less energy
  • fever
  • diarrhea
  • irritability or negativity
  • headaches
  • runny nose
  • bad breath
  • bloating
  • nausea
  • acne

Here are some longer term solutions to detox for acne:

Sunlight, Air, Water, Food

Be sure to get as much sunshine and fresh air outside as you can. This is probably obvious to you but the link to clear skin may not be. Your body is a holistic system and every thing you do to improve your health will help your skin as well.

Indoor air quality is greatly lacking compared to the outdoors. I recommend having the best air purifier you can reasonably afford, because this will improve your health in so many ways in the long run.

On an even greater scale, water purity is also very important. Be sure you at least have a Brita filter or bottled water for your home. Tap water in most places is really not all that drinkable. If you have a bigger budget there are even better water filters out there, such as reverse-osmosis.

The food you eat dramatically affects your health. "You are what you eat" may be cliche, but it is so true. Be conscious of the foods you eat and ask yourself this everyday:

"What can I do today that can make me a little bit healthier than yesterday?"

All in all I hope you at least consider the idea of doing a detox for acne. Not only will it help clear your skin but it will lead to great health.
