How to Treat an Acne Cyst
by John
(NYC)
Though a pimple pops out on my face every once in a while, it doesn’t bother me unless it turns into an acne cyst. This is a medical term but I call it an inverted pimple. This is because it looks, exactly, like one. I always resist the urge to prick it because the longer it stays visible on my skin, the more I get annoyed.
An acne cyst is a lump under the skin which is filled with pus. It is kind of hard and thick and at times, it may ache. It is an unpleasant sight and whenever I have one, I couldn’t wait for it to go away.
It is a good thing that I have a cousin who is a dermatologist. Though I don’t make visits to her clinic, she takes time to treat this skin condition of mine. She pricks it gently to remove the pus and gives me skin antibiotic creams that would help the healing process.
There are simple ways to keep your skin from conditions such as this. However, in case you acquire a number, these are, likewise, some no-nonsense tips to keep in mind;
1. Prevention is better than cure. Make sure to always clean your face with either an antibacterial soap or a mild facial wash, especially, if your skin is prone to acne. Do this at least 3 times a day. More than that would lead to skin dryness, which can, also, cause an over production of sebum.
2. You should avoid touching your face, more so, your cysts. If you need to apply treatment, use clean hands or better yet, a cotton bud.
3. Pricking your cyst should be prevented since it may lead to a more severe condition and infection, altogether. This can be done, however, by a dermatologist who is an expert in this area.
4. Since acne is brought about by bacteria, you will be advised to apply treatment meant to kill bacteria. Use antibiotic creams that are recommended by dermatologists. Be wary, though, of medications that are too harsh for your skin. Some may contain ingredients that your skin is sensitive to.
5. To reduce the size of cysts, you may treat them with products containing salicylic acid, retinol or benzoic peroxide. Moreover, they prevent you from acquiring new cysts.
6. If your skin is sensitive, go for natural products, instead, like those that contain tea tree oil, witch hazel or need. They are known to be effective as skin cleansers and improve the condition and appearance of acne cysts with their anti-inflammatory attributes. Unlike other products, they do not have any side effects, when used.
7. In order for cysts to heal, you can either take Vitamin E supplements or apply it in the form of topical creams. Vitamin E is known to improve the health of our skin.
8. Eat a nutritious, well balanced diet to build your body resistance. This is to make it strong against skin infection.
In treating an acne cyst, it is not good to self medicate. So, before applying any treatments or taking supplements, it would be advisable to consult a dermatologist to properly manage your skin condition.
Treatments may take quite some time but with proper medication, improvement may be seen in as little as 2 months. For an acne cyst to be completely healed, you should be consistent when it comes to treatment.
